Meet Dr Emma Wain, Honorary Treasurer
Dr Emma Wain is an associate specialist at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She is an Elected Board Member since 2021, workforce representative and Chair of the SAS Committee from 2022 and Honorary Treasurer from 2023. Her clinical interests are orthopaedic and regional anaesthesia.
Why did you stand for election to board?
I became a SAS doctor primarily due to family reasons. It is not easy to step out of training and following this path has been harder than it needed to be at times. With my children reaching the stage where they are less immediately dependent on me, I had the opportunity to try to make this career choice less difficult and more valued for all those who choose to pursue it.
Why did you decide to become an anaesthetist/doctor?
I had a period of ill-health in my teens where I had a lot of contact with medical practitioners. My GP in particular was enormously helpful and showed me how much doctors can support people at difficult times of their lives. Anaesthetics appealed to me as it requires practical skills as well as cerebral.
What do you like most about your job?
The opportunity to interact with patients at what can be a very stressful time and trying to make that as easy and pain free as possible. I really enjoy regional anaesthesia – a patient being wide awake and enjoying watching their own shoulder arthroscopy is amazing. Every day is different, not always straightforward but managing to remain calm and lead others in difficult circumstances gives a great sense of achievement.
I had the opportunity to try to make this career choice less difficult and more valued for all those who choose to pursue it.
Who or what inspires you to do your best work?
Trying to provide the best service for each individual patient. The colleagues I work with every day do an amazing job for everyone, a theatre team working together seamlessly is an impressive spectacle.
What do you like to do in your free time?
My family is really important to me so spending time with them is my priority. I am fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the country and I go walking in the Shropshire hills regularly.
