Supporting anaesthetists in training

Anaesthesia journal

Anaesthesia is the official monthly journal of the Association and available to all members. It publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of general and regional anaesthesia, intensive care and pain therapy, including research on equipment.

Anaesthesia is aimed at consultant and trainee practitioners involved in all types of anaesthesia, intensive care medicine (including specialists from other disciplines) and pain therapy and also non-medical staff working in those areas.

Free patient transfer insurance

The Association has negotiated an exceptional deal to cover all our trainee members who escort patients in ambulances, or attend call outs.

The scope is very wide and includes helicopters and aircraft, and the return journey. Even accidents while driving personal cars are covered, for example, to the scene of a major accident. Find out more about our member’s insurance.

Trainee Committee support

The Trainee Committee supports and represents the interests of trainee anaesthetist members. The committee discusses trainee views at the Association board of directors and other committees and meetings. The Trainee Committee campaigns on important matters such as recruitment and pay. The Association’s advocacy work within hospitals has led to growing political support for the Association's wellbeing campaigns on fatigue, bullying and mental health.

You can contact the Trainee Committee on [email protected]. You can also follow the Trainee Committee on Twitter @Anaes_Trainees

Trainee Conference

The Trainee Conference is a must for all anaesthetic trainees, foundation year doctors, first year consultants and medical students. Association members are entitled to great discounted ticket prices.

The Trainee Conference offers the chance to showcase your knowledge by entering abstracts. As well as helping to raise your profile professionally, all accepted abstracts will be published in a special online edition of the journal Anaesthesia. There’s also a special prize awarded for an essay on the History of Anaesthesia and an award to recognise the great wellbeing work of trainees.

Around 300 attend the Trainee conference each year, offering a fantastic opportunity to network with colleagues, present your work as an oral presentation or poster and attend exciting and relevant workshops.

Free mentoring support

Members have access to a network of trained mentors across the UK. Mentoring is particularly useful at times of change, like settling into a new role. It provides an informal and confidential environment where opportunities, dilemmas and problems can be addressed and discussed.

The Association mentoring scheme is voluntary for both mentors and mentees and all services are free of charge to members. Potential mentees can book a session (Skype or Facetime) with one of our trained mentors.

Looking after you wellbeing

Wherever you are in your career as an anaesthetist, from medical student to consultant, we've got advice and information to help you along the way.

The Association's Trainee Committee launched the #CoffeeandaGas initiative as a way to promote improved workplace wellbeing. These events provide an opportunity for colleagues to take some time out of a busy working day and come together for a chat over a brew to share their concerns.

If there is an induction week at your hospital, why not plan a Coffee and a Gas session for getting to know new colleagues?

The Association is passionate about promoting safe anaesthesia, critical care and associated specialties in low-resource environments. We offer a number of opportunities to run courses in lower resource countries and to develop your skills as an anaesthetist.
