The second wave of Covid; your support in a storm.
Wednesday 14 October 2020
'We have a perfect storm on the horizon; depleted staff, depleted capacity, increasing workload.' This is taken from the recently published NHS Providers’ survey of Trust leaders.
The global pandemic saw the profession rising to the challenge, working hard, and providing the care. Now, as we head into winter, and with Covid cases rising again, health service leaders are expressing their concern with 99% of those surveyed stating they were concerned about current levels of burnout across the workforce and 94% extremely or moderately concerned about the impact of seasonal pressures.
Anaesthetic trainees have faced unprecedented additional pressures: exams cancelled, significant impacts on training progression, recruitment uncertainly and pandemic rotas, to name a few.
The Association of Anaesthetists Trainee Committee share the concerns expressed in the NHS Providers report. Anaesthetic trainees have faced unprecedented additional pressures: exams cancelled, significant impacts on training progression, recruitment uncertainly and pandemic rotas, to name a few. The health and wellbeing of our members and our extended anaesthesia family - nurses, ODPs, porters, surgeons and other allied healthcare professionals, has never been more important. We will continue to advocate for our trainee members: for rest facilities, for workplace civility, for mentoring and support services, and your wellbeing in general.
You can find a wealth of wellbeing resources available on our website to help support you over the coming months. In particular, there is our confidential, free mentoring network and our Vital Signs guide for Anaesthetists during Covid.
We may face a difficult time ahead, but we can face it together. The Association and its Trainee Committee are here for our members, please get in touch at [email protected] or tweet us @Anaes_Trainees, if there’s an issue you want us to help with.
We wish you all the best over the coming months.
Dr Roopa McCrossan, Dr Divya Raviraj, Dr Keith Hodgson, Dr Eireann Allen (Officers of the Trainee Committee)
